Prevention of infection by inhibiting or arresting the growth and multiplication of germs (infectious agents).

Antisepsis implies scrupulously clean and free of all living microorganisms.

From the Greek roots anti- meaning against + sepsis against putrefaction = literally, against putrefaction.
