Bruit

A sound, especially an abnormal one.

A bruit may be heard over an artery or vascular channel, reflecting turbulence of flow.

Listening for a bruit in the neck is a simple, safe, and inexpensive way to screen for stenosis (narrowing) of the carotid artery.

Bruit is French for noise.
