Muscular dystrophy, tibial

A specific form of muscular dystrophy in which weakness is usually confined to the anterior compartment (the front part) of the lower leg and, in particular, to the tibialis anterior muscle.

The muscle weakness usually starts at age 35 to 45, or later.

The disease was discovered in the 1990s.

It is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner and is due to mutation in the gene encoding titin, a giant filamentous protein essential to muscle structure, development, and elasticity
