Nodding syndrome
A mysterious disease of children that causes seizures, growth retardation (stunted growth), mental retardation and often, but not invariably, death.
Some children with the syndrome appear to recover.
Head nodding while eating is the first symptom.
So far the disease has only been seen in South Sudan.
The cause is currently unknown.
Neurological and EEG studies support the concept that nodding syndrome is a chronic, progressive, degenerative neurological disorder.
