These are small (the size of split peas), tender, transient nodules in the pads of fingers and toes and the palms and soles.

They are a highly diagnostic sign of bacterial infection of the heart (subacute bacterial endocarditis).

Named for the Canadian-born physician Sir William Osler (1849-1919)
