Mental functions are intact.

Due to degeneration of the globus pallidus.

Onset between the ages of 10 and 30 years.

Inheritance is autosomal dominant.

It is due to a herpes virus infection of the geniculate nerve ganglion that causes paralysis of the facial muscles on the same side of the face as the infection.
