Wasp sting

A sting from a wasp, like that of other large stinging insects such as bees, hornets and yellow jackets, capable of triggering allergic reactions varying greatly in severity and scope from a localized reaction limited to swelling of the hand or foot (where the bite occurred) to life-threatening systemic (bodywide) reactions in which the airway can swell closed.

Avoidance of such stings and prompt treatment of them are essential.

In selected cases, allergy injection therapy is highly effective.

The three 'A's' of stinging insect allergy are taught in medical school.
